“The intense lime-green object moved far too slowly to have been a meteor and left no trail of sparks or dust cloud as would be typical of meteors flying at low altitudes … and was turning on and off like a light switch … those green aerial objects were ‘artificial in origin.’”
— Classified letter to the USAF on December 20, 1948, from Prof. Lincoln LaPaz, Ph.D., Mathematician and Director, Institute of Meteoritics, Albuquerque, New Mexico
April 13, 2020 Alamogordo, New Mexico – On July 10, 1947, only two days after the crash of a “Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region” made the front page of the Roswell Daily Record — astronomer and meteorite expert Dr. Lincoln LaPaz, Ph.D., was baffled by an unidentified glowing object that he saw with his family 70 miles north of Roswell near Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Dr. LaPaz had received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1928 at the University of Chicago. By 1942, he was a mathematics professor at Ohio State University. Then during World War II, he worked for the American Second Air Force as Technical Director in Operations Analysis. He became an expert in ballistics and meteorites.
By the end of the war in 1945, Dr. LaPaz joined the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and founded the Institute of Meteoritics for which he was Director until 1966. Between 1945 and 1953, Dr. LaPaz was also Director of the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy. In 1948, the United States Air Force asked him to investigate a persistent and puzzling series of mysterious lime and kelly green “fireballs.”
Dr. LaPaz said that on the night of July 10, 1947, in Fort Sumner, that he, his wife Leota Ray and their two children Leota Jean and Mary, “All four of us almost simultaneously became aware of a curious bright object almost motionless among the clouds. As seen projected against these dark clouds, the object gave the strongest impression of self-luminosity. It showed a sharp and firm regular outline, namely one of a smooth elliptical character much harder and sharper than the edges of the cloudlets. …The hue of the luminous object was somewhat less white than the light of Jupiter in a dark sky, not aluminum or silver-colored. …The object clearly exhibited a sort of wobbling motion …This wobbling motion served to set off the object as a rigid, if not solid body.” After remaining stationary in the sky right above the family for about 30 seconds, the UFO then suddenly rose straight up. Dr. LaPaz was surprised. “This remarkably sudden ascent thoroughly convinced me that we were dealing with an absolutely novel airborne device.”
LaPaz Green Fireball Sighting in December 1948: “Artificial In Origin.”
Dr. LaPaz had a second sighting on December 12, 1948, of a lime green “fireball” moving in the sky above the highly classified Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico where the atomic bomb was developed to drop on the Japanese in August 1945, ending World War II. Watching the strange green, glowing object in the night sky, Dr. LaPaz triangulated its aerial path. In a classified letter to the USAF on December 20, 1948, he reported:
“The object moved far too slowly to have been a meteor and left no trail of sparks or dust cloud as would be typical of meteors flying at low altitudes. Other anomalous characteristics were the intense lime-green color; low altitude of only 8–10 miles, yet exhibiting no sound; a flat rather than arced trajectory; and turning on and off like a light switch.” He would eventually conclude the green aerial objects were “artificial in origin.”
But whose technology? And why?
There were many other reports in 1948, such as a Kirtland Air Force Base pilot in Albuquerque, who filed a report on December 6, 1948, about seeing “an unidentified object similar to a green flare . . . on the east slope of the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque.” Two months later on February 29, 1949, the Los Alamos Skyliner reported green fireballs appeared multiple times over Los Alamos, “generally about 2 am.” As late as December 18, 1950, the Albuquerque Journal reported an airline pilot and his co-pilot watched a green fireball circle Los Alamos Laboratory for at least ten minutes before the UFO took off at a high rate of speed, turning from kelly green to white before it vanished. Other eyewitnesses reported seeing unexplained green “fireballs” above Santa Fe, Taos and Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Further south the Alamogordo Daily News reported people were seeing green fireballs over Alamogordo near Holloman AFB and White Sands Proving Ground and above Roswell.
“A Grand Cover-up?”
Dr. LaPaz even told Project Blue Book science advisor and astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek that there was “a grand cover-up for something the government does not want discussed.” Ironically, Dr. Hynek was collaborating with the USAF Air Technical Intelligence Center at Wright-Patterson AFB about what astronomers themselves were seeing and what they thought about UFOs, or “unidentified aerial objects,” UAOs.
Pages 13-14 state: “It appears that the green fireballs can be characterized by being extremely bright, most of them lighting up the sky in the daytime, at estimated magnitude -12, which is extremely bright, at least twice as bright as Venus (around -5 to -3). The green fireballs appear to come in bunches and at one time, 10 were observed in 13 days. No noise is associated with them despite their brightness. The light appears to be homogeneous, and their light curve resembles a square wave. That is, it comes on abruptly, remains constant while burning, and goes out exceedingly abruptly, as though it is snapped out by a push-button. They leave no trails or trains. As to their color, Dr. Lincoln LaPaz … insists that this is a different green, corresponding to the green line in the copper spectrum at 5218 Angstrom units. These objects generally move in a preferential north-south, south-north direction.”
Huge Green “Orb Craft” That Taunted F4s
On April 3, 2020, I received a phone call from a 71-year-old Vietnam vet born January 1, 1949, in Henderson, Kentucky. He skipped high school to serve with the U. S. Navy in Vietnam from April 29, 1966, to October 10, 1969, and fought in the Tet offensive. He sent me a copy of his DD-214. He said Viet Nam was really rough and he wanted out.
So he returned to the United States and was hired by the Dept. of Defense through the Land-Air Division of Holloman AFB in New Mexico to work as a generator maintenance mechanic for the White Sands Missile Range beginning in 1969 and onward seven years until 1976. He asked me to call him “Stephen P.” because even after 50 years since he signed his Navy Non-Disclosure Agreements, he is still worried. NDAs were designed to force military personnel to keep classified secrets. Violations would be punished. Stephen P.’s secrets have included his firsthand eyewitness knowledge of UFOs and small Grey beings at White Sands Missile Range and La Luz, New Mexico.
But he has had 6 heart attacks, several surgeries and when I first talked to him by phone he said, “Linda, I would like to leave what I have seen with someone who cares about the truth and what I witnessed at White Sands.”

Stephen P., Navy Vietnam Vet, 1966-1969. Then Dept. of Defense Land-Air Division, Holloman AFB, Generator Maintenance Mechanic, White Sands Missile Range, 1969 – 1976, Alamogordo, New Mexico: “The first time I encountered a UFO was in a 3 AM (summer 1970) preparation at Missile Launch Site 36 — and I was at a site on the White Sands Missile Range called the ‘Russ Site, RUSS’ for radar. [About 5 miles west of Three Rivers, New Mexico, and 34 miles north of Missile Launch 36 site, shown on this White Sands Missile Range map.]
Stephen P.: “A friend of mine that was running the telemetry station there — he and I witnessed a great big — what we thought was a green comet coming from the north on the horizon. And it went to White Sands and hovered over a launch complex over there and it got here in like 2 minutes from the horizon. And then once it hovered, it was a great big emerald green orb — huge! Like a large emerald that has been lighted. We could see it from 34 miles away.
WHAT DO YOU ESTIMATE THE DIAMETER?
Oh, my God, I couldn’t even estimate! We were 30 some miles away and it was huge in the sky. And while we were watching it, 12 little intense bright, white lights came out the bottom of it and ran all over up and down the mountains over there behind the launch complex, up and down the canyons and all up on the hillsides and all over, which were miles long. And they were traveling those miles of long canyons in seconds.
And then after about 3 or 4 minutes, they all gathered back under the (big green orb) craft and went right back up in it. I know the military knew it was there because they chased it with F4s (jet fighters). And they ran it away from the launch complex. It went southeast toward Orogrande, New Mexico.
We saw a tape at the White Sands Photo Lab. One of the pilots stated later that it (green UFO) accelerated to Mach 10, went over to Orogrande, slowed to Mach 5, and made two 90-degree turns and were back over the launcher before they could turn the F4s around over at Orogrande.
JUST LIKE THE BIG GREEN ORB WAS PLAYING CAT AND MOUSE WITH THE F4s.
Yeah, oh yeah! They said it was hovering back over the launch complex within a matter of minutes.
WHAT DID YOU SEE WITH YOUR OWN EYES OF THE GUN CAMERA (RECORDING) THAT THEY SHOWED YOU?
It was just that thing leaving the launch complex. They launched these planes from Holloman AFB, which was a lot closer to the launch complex than I was at Russ Site.
The jets left with the afterburners on and proceeded that way toward the launch complex. So we got to see their afterburners in the night sky heading towards this green orb. And when they got what I assume to be about half way to their destination, the green orb elevated another few thousand feet, and then it just vanished almost. It turned into the same thing we saw previously when it came from the horizon, which looked like a green comet. It was traveling so fast visually that it looked like it had a long, green tail.
DID THEY MONITOR IN ANY KIND OF A RECORDING DEVICE?
They did. They had nose film from a camera. It went to the photo lab at White Sands. It was a 3 o’clock in the morning mission. It was pitch black except for a few stars in the sky. F4s were scrambled. I think they got some nose camera film.
WHERE GEOGRAPHICALLY WOULD THE BIG, GREEN UFO HAVE HOVERED OVER BEFORE IT EMITTED ALL THE LITTLE LIGHTS?
That was Launch Complex 36, I believe. This was an Athena and it was supposed to go to Green River, Utah, and impact on that missile range there. That great big emerald green orb prevented the missile from being launched. We finally cancelled the mission.
THE UFO INTERRUPTED A MISSILE LAUNCH EXERCISE.
Correct.
WAS EVERYTHING SHUT DOWN ON THE MISSILE (BY THE UFO)?
I do not know that. All I know is that the F4s were scrambled shortly after the little bright lights went back up in the belly of that thing (huge green orb). And they chased it south towards Orogrande.
THE SUN COMES UP. YOU ARE WORKING THERE. WHAT WAS THE SCUTTLEBUTT AMONG PEOPLE THERE ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED IN THE NIGHT?
They kept it pretty hush hush. And the few of us that did witness it, we had already signed forms that we wouldn’t talk about stuff we saw out there and stuff they were testing. You know, most of us on the missile range were capable of viewing this thing, including the people at the launch complex. They all have security clearances and they aren’t supposed to speak about stuff like that they see.
BUT AS YOU AND I HAVE DISCUSSED, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 50 YEARS LATER NOW!
Yeah, I know. I wasn’t going to say anything to anybody so I didn’t look like a crazy person, but I would like somebody to bestow this knowledge on before I’m gone from here, so somebody else knows what I’ve seen.
I’M GRATEFUL BECAUSE I KNOW THAT YOU ARE TELLING ME THE TRUTH.”
